Comprehensive Guide on Water jet Cutting

Collaboration blog between Venwiz and SASA Enggtech sharing valuable insights on the importance of water jet cutting and service capabilities of SASA Enggtech

Water jet cutting is a highly effective and adaptable technique for precisely cutting various materials. It erodes and cuts through any material using a pressurized water stream that has been combined with an abrasive material. In this blog, we provide an in-depth understanding of waterjet cutting, including its applications and benefits.

What is water jet cutting?

Water jet cutting is a fabrication process that shapes and cuts material using high-pressure water jets supplied by pressurizing pumps that create a supersonic stream of water. During water jet cutting, a small, precise nozzle projects water under pressure up to 392 MPa on the material. Water shoots out of the nozzle at more than three times the speed of sound.

Unlike conventional cutting methods, waterjet cutting is a cold-cutting method (non-thermal), i.e., no heat is used during the cutting process. Explore other cutting methods here.

Types of water jet cutting machines

There are two types of machines:

  • Pure waterjet cutting machines use a high-pressure water stream to cut through heat-sensitive materials like electronics, architectural components, and aerospace parts.
  • Abrasive waterjet cutting machines are a particular kind of waterjet cutter that can cut through materials at high speeds by using a stream of water combined with abrasive particles. This machine is used in a variety of industries, including fabrication, manufacturing, and the automobile industry.

Computer numerical control (CNC) systems control both machines that can produce complex shapes with high cutting accuracy.
