FMCG Achieves 20% Cost Saving for Galvanized Steel Fire Escape Fabrication Project

Case study for Fabricating staircase in Nestle

Overview

A leading global FMCG company required a custom-designed galvanized steel (GI) bolted fire escape staircase for their plant in Karnataka, India. The project presented a significant challenge, as the staircase had to be accommodated within a limited space while adhering to stringent building codes and safety regulations. Faced with a tight timeline, the client entrusted us to identify and engage a qualified vendor capable of meeting their project requirements.

Challenges

Galvanized Steel Fire Escape being installed at Nestle

There were some challenges for installing the Galvanized steel fire escape at the plant

  • Limited Space: The staircase had to be installed in a restricted 3-meter space, requiring expert erecting and fabrication expertise.
  • Regulatory Compliance: The design had to adhere to the National Building Code of India (NBC), IS 3594 (1991), and OSHA standards. The vendor had to follow the safety protocol of the client.
  • Tight deadlines: We had to source a qualified vendor in 15 days, and the vendor had a strict 60-day deadline for project completion.
  • Volume of fabrication: The project involved a significant amount of material—300 metric tons—that needed on-site fabrication. Careful quality control of both prefabricated and on-site components was crucial.
  • Payment Terms: The client had no advance payments and a 45-day credit period.  We had to ensure the vendor had the resources to execute the project.

Vendor Attributes

  • Fabrication Expertise: The vendor should specialise in industrial metal fabrication, particularly for platforms, with a strong focus on safety.
  • Structural Steel Experience: The vendor should have a proven track record of handling over 100 metric tons of structural steel fabrication and installation.
  • Safety Protocols: The vendor should have well-defined internal safety procedures.
  • Location Preference: Vendors located in the Mysore and Bangalore regions were preferred.
